I like to do HPDE schools with my civic . I have been to three so far, and i have learned a whole lot of information that no driving school can teach you. Being a better driver on the track converts to a more alert driver out on the open roads. I now will share some of my helpful hints and tips with what i do to prepare for the track events and how to properly drive on a course.
When i went to my first event, it was at Virginia International Raceway. I was going to participate with the integra type r expo- figures right?
check list of items you will-
Jeans(or fire suit)
COTTON Long sleeved T(some times they let you get away with underarmour)
DOT approved Helmet
No Open Toe shoes(duh)
Clean car( floor mats, pens, loose items in car removed)
Brakes Checked
QUALITY brake fluid. I found Castrol SRF works best. 75$ at NSI. Never have to bleed brakes with this stuff.
Bleeder bottle, if needed to bleed brakes
Extra set of brake pads
Tire pressure gauge
Tools- a must
extra parts(spark plugs, filters, lubricants) I bring a small bag with these tiems.
once everything is checked off, i do a inspection of my car, body trim, oil, i always run a quart high on track, tire pressures(i have race slicks) and anything in my car that i might not have taken out
Any ways. When going to a track like these, most times you are in the middle of no where, mainly becuase of the noise that comes from our loud engines. I always take a cooler- pack it with ice, water, and light snack foods. I never eat anything heavy becuase of the motions you go through can equal an unpleasent stomach at the end of your 30 minute session. Also take some cover from the sun or rain. This is very important on those 100 degree days.
Out on track, its important to know- YOU ARE NOT THE FASTEST ONE OUT THERE. I have seen many people go off track, hit tire walls, bumpers destroyed and come times cars even totaled. This event is to make you a better, faster driver while in control. The best advice you can receive while out there is what your instructors tell you. They know best.
Paying attention to other cars is also a key factor in making everything run smoothly. When a faster car comes up behind you, let him by! I have seen aggressive driving occur when they feel the need to try and out drive another. This only causes accidents/run offs. Do as the flag workers tell you. Play around with other peoples lives can get you kicked off pretty fast.
Drive hard, drive fast, stay in control, don't ever drive out of your limits. Driving over 125 mph during a turn is fun pulling almost 1 g.. get to do that every day?
